It was just as well Manchester City did send in their reserves against Australia at Maine Road.
Had they fielded a stronger team the World Cup men from Down Under would surely have been beaten even more handsomely than 2-0.
“Full marks to these talented youngsters. But quite honestly the pitch was ear from our liking.” said Aussie team boss Frank Parsons.
However, let that not detract from City’s performance against a side unbeaten in 12 previous matches on a world tour undertaken to build up for the 1974 Munich finals.
But if this is the best Australia can offer, all I can suggest is they forget the World Cup, and stick to cricket!
City’s greater skill, pace and use of the ball left the Aussies gasping as they hammered in goals from Paul Smith and Mike Brennan.
Freddie Hill’s experience finely balanced the enthusiasm of City’s talented youngsters, with Stephen Carter lookimg particularly skilful on the ball, despite his lack of pace.
