JOHN BOND WRITING IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 23RD JANUARY 1982
Reports back from France where we had our last full-match test were very encouraging and to some extent took away some of the bad taste left from our indifferent home perfonnance against Stoke City in the League a fortnight ago.
My assistant, John Benson, took charge of the first team party for the friendly against Bordeaux while I attempted to tie up some loose ends in the transfer market where we had two sales pending. Although Bordeaux, with their six intemationals, took a 2-0 lead I was delighted to hear that the City determination didn’t waver and they continued to knock the ball about in great style while recovering the two-goal deficit with a couple of scoring efforts from Trevor Francis. lt appears we ran the show before the finish and might well have shaded a victory-but honours ended even, which does no harm to the City reputation, and it was a good stem work-out.
