REPORT FROM SUNDAY LIFE 17TH MARCH 1991
Two goals in injury time of the first half provided most of what little excitement there was in this dreary Maine Road encounter.
A draw was a fair result with Manchester City unable to break down Wimbledon’s offside trap, and Colin Hendry virtually neutralising the serial threat of John Fashanu.
The one occasion when Fashanu broke free of his shackles came a minute into injury time in the first half.
Warren Barton found Paul McGee on the right, and his deep cross to the far post was nodded in by fashanu.
Wimbledon’s joy lasted less than a minute as Lawrie Sanchez handled a Mark Ward cross in his own box and Ward thumped home the resulting penalty.
Wimbledon’s McGee was booked for descent following the penalty award by referee Keith Burge.

City player-manager Peter Reid almost broke the deadlock early on. The City boss brought a fine diving save from Wimbledon’s goalkeeper Hans Segers with a superb dipping volley in the 10th minute, and Reid was just wide with a similar effort soon after.
Ward had two chances after the interval, but he was foiled on both occasions by Segers When through with only the goalkeeper to beat.
With the game heading for a draw Hendry almost snatched a winner in the 88th minute for City when his blistering 30-yard drive cracked against the angle of post and bar with Segers beaten.
Reid said: “Wimbledon are a difficult side to play against. Goalmouth incidents were rare but Wimbledon play like that they are well organised and we could not break them down.”
