Manchester City goalkeeper Tony Coton conceded two penalties in five sensational minutes against Liverpool at Maine Road.
Danish International Jan Molby scored them both as City were rocked by the backlash threatened by Liverpool after three successive defeats and John Barnes sewed up a 3-0 defeat five minutes from time.
Molby put them ahead after 40 minutes following a disputed foul on Peter Beardsley by Coton who was booked for protesting.
Then the City keeper was penalised for bringing down Ian Rush on the stroke of half-time and Molby struck again.
It seemed an injustice and City fans showed their disapproval by booing Spennymoor referee George Courtney from the field at half-time.
