From ONCE A BLUE ALWAYS A BLUE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF RICHARD EDGHILL
… The next game was the following midweek. Peter Reid’s Sunderland were the opposition but this time it was a very exciting match and morale boosting 4-2 win. Sunderland had won their opener 1-0 against Arsenal and may have been regarded as favourites but Joe went with the same team that were played off the park at Charlton and said “Now you lot rectify it” It was a superb response from the boys.
Peter Reid and Niall Quinn were coming back to City and there was a real buzz in the air. It was a really brilliant atmosphere for our Premier League homecoming. I was so proud to lead the team out after all that had gone on at the club, and what a game it turned out to be.
We were two goals to the good early on through Wanchope and a rare strike from Alfie Haaland and we were creating chances by using a mixture of short and long passing. We were competing well but maybe the system was allowing the opposition to play as well. Quinn and Kevin Phillips brought them back into it at 2-2 but then instead of crumbling we found another gear and saw them off at 4-2 with Wanchope going on to complete a hat-trick.
During that game I had a dust up with Don Hutchison and he made a very unsavoury remark towards me. We had to be seperated on the pitch  and the crowd were loving my passion, shouting my name in support, but they didn’t know the full story of why I had lost it.
At the time Hutchison didn’t like a tackle I made on him and he said something quite distaseful in response, I tried to get at him again in the tunnel but was stopped from doing so. Hutchison tried to apologise after the game but I didn’t want to know.
