This was not to be a memorable debut for Joe Royle, who had recently joined City from the Blue half of Merseyside.
Liverpool’s title challenge was waning, they hadn’t won in nine games, however a woeful defensive display from City, coupled with a great attacking 45 minutes from Liverpool saw the Scousers 3-0 up at half-time, a further goal in the second half, and then a consolation goal from Colin Bell, a lovely lob over Clemence one minute from the end, saw Liverpool climb back to the top of the League with a 4-1 victory.
Anfield is certainly becoming a hoodoo ground for the Blues they haven’t won there in the League now since 1953.
