FROM AN ARTICLE ‘THAT WAS THE WEEK’ FROM THE CITY PROGRAMME 6TH MARCH 1999
… The changes had to be rung for the visit of Ipswich Town. Neil McNab and John Gidman were injured, and both Stewart and Seagraves suspended. The squad of 13 contained no fewer than ten home-grown products. In fact, the whole side cost no more than £350,000!
… Ipswich had gleaned seven points from a possible 36, and maybe there were signs of desperation in some of their tackling, treated leniently by the substitute referee, David Kirk, who took charge for the second half following an injury to John Watson.
Morley scored his first League goal for the Blues after 11 minutes. Goalkeeper Jon Hallworth failed to come out to close down David White, and from his overhead kick, Morley headed into the top corner.
The result was settled after 78 minutes when Varadi swooped yet again, meeting Paul Simpson’s cross with a volley from the edge of the box.
Mel Machin was pleased with the week’s events. “That did a power of good for our confidence,” he beamed ”and if we can beat Sheffield United on Tuesday, then we must be in with a chance on Sunday against Liverpool.”
