PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 24TH APRIL 1975
Manchester City didn’t hand Derby the League Championship, it was referee Keith Styles.
If he had awarded Ipswich a blatant 5th minute penalty at Maine Road last night the Blues would never have scored the goal that deflated East Anglian hopes of staying the title pace.
For within 30 seconds of the controversial incident, in which Colin Bell stumbled into Bryan Hamilton as he was poised to shoot, City’s England player struck with devastating effect at the other end.
It was a double edged blow from which Ipswich never really recovered.
The outcome was that a potentially great match, rich in talent, never rose above average, and Mr Styles must take some of the blame for the way he handled the game.
City had to thank their defence for constantly getting them out of trouble. For the attack was virtually non-existent after Bell had struck that early blow.
Only Dennis Tueart moved forward with conviction. Barney Daniels was never able to express himself as he had done in his impressive display against Burnley, and Rodney Marsh had another of those frustrating games when he seemed completely out of touch.
… Ipswich, for all there second half pressure, lacked the killer touch near goal that separates champions from the rest…
