CORRIGAN HOLDS THE FORT

JAMES HOLLAND WRITING IN THE GUARDIAN 21ST APRIL 1975
A Burnley side lacking the presence of several senior players for a variety of reasons presented Manchester City with few serious problems at Maine Road on Saturday and City cruised to a comfortable victory by two clear goals.
The margin might have been greater, yet for all their superiority City did not quite get into top gear. Bell, Tueart and Hartford sped merrily through and around the Burnley defence, Daniels bustled to good effect, but for once the impudent, hypnotic magic of Marsh was not there, which was just as well for Burnley. Donachie found ample time and opportunity to link up with many of City’s raids and when Burnley, who did not submit meekly, managed to counter attack, their advances were firmly contained by Hammond, Doyle and Booth, the talented James in particular being given few chances to display his skills.
Another pleasing aspect from the City point of view was the form of the much maligned Corrigan in goal. He made a splendid diving save from Flynn in the opening skirmishes and generally played with a confidence he has not often shown in the past. There has been a difference between him and the club for some time now. Could a rapprochement be at hand.
… One of the main stumbling blocks to City was Waldron, who was ably supported by the industrious Rodaway.
Stevenson capably dealt with numerous shots that came his way, but I question if he even saw the ball fly into the net when Bell opened the scoring with a great drive from 35 yards out after 25 minutes. Neither did Stevenson have any chance with Tueart’s ground shot well away to the goalkeeper’s right in the 73rd minute, the ball striking the inside of the post before entering the net. Waldron and Booth abruptly halted menacing dashes by Tueart and Noble respectively by the simple expedient of tripping them up, offences for which they were booked by Mr Davey, a most unobtrusive referee.
