… Joe Corrigan again kept the Blues in the hunt at Portman Road last night, but it was ultimately errors by other defenders that handed Ipswich a 2-1 victory to sustain the East Anglian’s side late burst for a UEFA Cup qualifying place.
For once the resilient and reliable Mike Doyle fell below his normally immaculate level as City lost out against a side who were there for the taking.
They got back into the game at a crucial psychological moment, a minute after half-time, but then failed to maintain the pressure.
It left Ipswich coasting to a win deserved only because City showed few attacking ideas or invention.
But Joe Royle was ponderously lethargic and Peter Barnes too often ran into trouble to be seriously effective. Dennis Tueart flashed in and out of the game, leaving Ipswich goalkeeper Paul Cooper with little to do.
City’s problems stemmed from carelessness at the back, Geoff Hammond was caught hopelessly out of position for the first goal with Ipswich quickly playing the ball to the open space on the left. David Johnson left Doyle flat on his back before crossing to the line where Mick Lambert headed a perfect goal.
Doyle and Hammond were again caught out by Trevor Whymark for the second, making it an extremely unhappy match for both defenders.
