PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 28TH DECEMBER 1983
… Huddersfield were brushed aside at Leeds Road yesterday.
A 3-1 victory was the deserved reward for the Blues, whose fluency and commitment was matched by solid endeavour against a side who had lost only once previously in a home League match this term.
City again fortunately found the consistency that deserted them in a late autumn trail of disaster which had seen them take only five points from the same number of games.
… I believe the first half display was one of the best by a City side for years. And the opening goal after six minutes was devastatingly executed and clinically finished with Steve Kinsey striking his second within two days.
Indeed Kinsey’s electric pace was a significant factor in City’s eventual succes.
Graham Baker’s inventiveness was again evident although his seventh booking of the season took the shine from a display in which he too was a scoring hero.
Yet Baker’s claims that he is becoming a marked man could be justified. His caution that came within two weeks of completing a three match ban after topping 21 points, was harsh to say the least.
And there was personal glory for Geoff Lomax, maker of the firt goal and scorer of the last. In fact his 75th minute points clincher couldn’t have been better timed.
Town were rallying after trimming back City’s two goal first half lead, but the 19 year old right back curled in an effort that went in off a post.
Lomax, however, had the grace to admit “I didn’t rally intend it that way.”
