FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 6 MAY 1989
Our Boxing Day visitors were neighbours Oldham and we got back on the winning trail with a 2-0 scoreline. A crowd of nearly 36,000 appreciated City’s efforts, especially in the second half as the team got the measure of the visitors’ defence. The only notable feature of the first half had been the collecting of names by the referee (three), and he added two more later on.
After the break, it seemed only a matter of time before City scored and Goram came under intense pressure from Tolmie and Baker, but it was Kinsey who put City in front in the 58th minute. Just prior to that goal Athletic almost scored when Palmer hit the underside of the bar. However, with 6 minutes left City clinched the points when Kinsey’s cross found Parlane, who scored with a powerful drive.
