The scent of Wembley, and the prospect of another appearance there before their span as FA Cup holders has run it’s full course produced a devastating performance from Manchester City last night.
Ther was so much venom, power and compelling strategy in their attacks that it looked more like a declaration of war on Queens Park Rangers rather than an attempt to remove them from the League Cup.
Rangers, former holders of the League Cup, had an agonising first half hour.
Colin Bell and Francis Lee had produced some enthralling performances in the past, but rarely a combined effort of such merciless splendour.
Bell scored twice before Rangers were fully aware of his presence, and Lee’s drive and devilish footwork produced the passes for all three goals.
Both are in the England party for next week’s international against Holland in Amsterdam. Both should be automatic selections.
City’s opening goals were scored expertly after seven and nine minutes by Bell, leaving the Ranger’s defence in confusion.
And it was Lee who made the opening for Mike Summerbee to score a simple goal after 24 minutes.
Rangers were in a sorry state and incapable of countering the City attack effectively. Realising the match was won City eased off in the second half and were content to hold Rangers in check.
