MATCH REPORT FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 24TH JANUARY 1992
Manchester City wound up their week-long trip to Ireland with a comfortable victory over Derry City last night.
A crowd of more than 8,000 saw the League of Ireland leaders take on an experimental City side which included youngster David Brightwell at centre-half with ‘forgotten’ Wayne Clarke forming a new strike force alongside David White.
Clarke, who has not appeared in the First Division this season, gave watching manager Peter Reid a timely reminder of his goal poaching ability, when he pounced after 26 minutes to convert a cross from White.

Clarke underlined City’s dominance when he returned the compliment two minutes from time with a centre which was swept home by the menacing White for his tenth goal in his last dozen senior outings.
Young Brightwell looked comfortable at the back alongside Keith Curle with first Andy Dibble and then Tony Coton scarcely troubled by the Derry attack.
Coach Tony Book said: “I’m sure it was very entertaining for the big crowd. I know the manager was particularly pleased with David Brightwell’s display. He looked comfortable throughout and seemed to form a good understanding with Keith Curle.
