CITY 4 YORK CITY 1
League Cup 4th Round
5th December 1973
City Marsh(3), Lee(pen)
City MacRae, Pardoe, Donachie, Doyle, Booth, Towers, Summerbee, Bell, Marsh, Lee, Leman, – sub Law(unused)
BY THE TIME the replay came round, City had a new manager. Johnny Hart, taken ill after the Walsall replay at Maine Road, had finally stepped down and Ron Saunders had won the battle with Tony Book for the post of his successor. And the new back-stage partnership were able to sit back and enjoy a goal-studded performance.
Lee maintained his record as an ace penalty taker, but this time the limelight was stolen by Marsh, who became the second City player to score a hat-trick in this season’s League Cup campaign.
York had splendidly hit back to equalise an early City goal, but once the Blues had gone ahead again there was no doubting the result of a highly entertaining match.
