York, a side famous for past exploits as giant killers – who could forget their fabulous performance in reaching the semi-finals of the F.A. Cup in 1955 – steeled themselves to again cut down to size First Division aristocrats.
And they thought they had the Blues on their knees, as Chris Jones, once a City player himself, drove in a point blank range shot. Fortunately, Tommy Booth was in the way and though painfully knocked out as the ball struck him flush in the face, it prevented a near goal.
It was the nearest York came to scoring. The Blues outplayed them in every department, doing everything but hit the vital goal to finally sink gallant Third Division opponents.
