Relegation threatened City played league leaders Sunderland at Roker Park. In characteristic style, they upset all the form books and established a 2-0 lead before Sunderland replied with penalty from Stelling. Shortly afterwards the home side were awarded another penalty, which Trautmann saved comfortably. The referee judged him to have moved before the full back had taken the kick and ordered a retake. Bert was furious, he grabbed the ball and, exploding with anger, booted it as far as possible into the crowd, who in turn hooted their ridicule and chants of ‘Sieg Heil’ started, doing little for Bert’s application to Stelling’s third penalty kick. He saved it again, silencing the crowd, while Westcott sidled up to the referee to ask, nonchanantly, if he thought the second save was better than the first one.
