GOALS FROM COLIN BELL AND MIKE DOYLE
Stoke City came to Maine Road… and trudged away beaten 3-1. City’s star man was Ian Bowyer who gave Marsh a nightmare aftemoon. Ian had a foot in City’s opening goal after 9 minutes, when his excellent cross from an Oakes pass was tidied up by Bell.
Bad finishing then affected the Blues and Marsh scored an odd goal after 55 minutes. Stoke then had a seemingly good goal disallowed and the game was going to sleep when City remembered they should be entertaining the fans. They pressurised the visitors into conceding a dubious penalty, Summerbee seeming to be merely obstructed, which Doyle whacked in. This compensated us for the one we should have had in the opening minute when Elder chopped Young. Then after 85 minutes a Doyle throw was headed backwards by Summerbee and Owen’s header gave Banks no chance.
