Alan McLoughlin’s, first goal for Southampton could prove to be the one that keeps the Saints in Division One.
The 23 year old Eire international midfield player struck two minutes into injury time to give relegation threatened Southampton a 3-3 draw against Manchester City at Maine Road.
McLoughlin who began his career at nearby Manchester United and Cost the Saints a record £1 million pound fee From Swindon last December pounced to turn the ball home after Rodney Wallace had headed on Barry Horne’s cross.
Southampton manager Chris Nichol said: “I am particularly pleased that Alan McLoughlin scored. It was his first goal for the club and he deserved it.
After a miserable first half the all action second period produced six goals.
Southampton went ahead two minutes after the interval when Kevin Moore sent Matthew Le Tissier racing clear down the left and he crashed the ball home from inside the City box.
City equalised in the 66th minutes. Steve Redmond’s long ball was nodded on by Eire international striker Niall Quinn inside the Southampton box and Clive Allen pounced To turn the ball into the net.
City took the lead seven minutes later when Peter Reid touched a free kick on the right edge of the Southampton box to Adrian Heath. Heath stopped the ball and Mark Brennan crashed his shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Southampton recovered to make it 2-2 after 81 minutes through a brilliant 25-yard volley from substitute Russell Osman.
City stormed back to regain the lead after 86th minutes. Mark, Ward found Heath on the right and his superb knock back from the by-line was fired in by David White From 12 yards out. Southampton looked to be heading for a defeat until McLoughlan popped up for their vital, third goal in injury time.
