FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 7TH JANUARY 1989
The replay… was a real thriller. City were at their typical tantalizing best, or worst!
Malcolm Allison’s pre-match team talk no doubt inspired the Blues to go 3-0 up before a quarter of an hour had elapsed. Watson, Deyna and Power set up Owen to net the first (45 seconds!) and another fine team move brought a second via Kidd’s shot five minutes later. Kidd also headed the third.
But United stormed back early in the second half to score through Breckin, a 25-yard drive, and Green, who nipped round the wall to head in Smith’s free-kick. Rotherharn went all out for an equaliser and indeed had the ball in for two disallowed goals. The first was offside, the second scrubbed out for a foul on Macrae.
The Blues really only clinched it in the last minute, Barnes beating McAllister to make the final score 4-2.
