FROM NOTES BY JIMMY FRIZZELL IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 5TH SEPTEMBER 1987
…Then it was over to Boundary Park and my old club, Oldham Athletic. And a 1-1 draw. It was a good point to get from a team involved in last season’s promotion battle right to the death. And it was probably as good a game as I have seen on an artificial surface.
But I am not an astro-turf fan! Not in any way. Our players don’t enjoy playing on these surfaces, whether it’s at Luton, Queens Park Rangers, Oldham or anywhere else. Not only that, these pitches do cause problems for players.
Alter the game at Boundary Park, we had five players suffering from badly grazed knees, thighs or shins from sliding on the surface, wounds which took quite a few days to heal up. We gave our players penicillin tablets before the game because of the likelihood of this type of injury, which is like a carpet burn, and the danger of possible infection.
But that didn’t stop Kenny Clements from having problems when a bad burn turned septic. He was kept out of training until the following Friday…
