PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 5TH MAY 1976
It was the same old story for Manchester City, the points were there for the taking, but a chance to improve their abysmal away record was carelessly tossed away.
The Blues could have been three up before United got into their scoring stride.
Asa Hartford missed all three gilt-edged openings, yet the Scottish international’s skill emerged as one of the few City successes on a night when Dennis Tueart and Peter Barnes were again disappointing.
… Keeper Joe Corrigan had a good game although I would fault him with United’s first goal from Gordon Hill, a long shot that curled inside a post.
Barnes must take the blame for the second, needlessly conceding possession and allowing United to break down a City move on the left.
Newcomer Mike Docherty, the free transfer signing from Burnley, did well enough on his City debut, considering it was his first League game this year.
