REPORT FROM THE GUARDIAN 5TH AUGUST 1987
Manchester United last night defeated Manchester City 3-1 to re-emphasise the cavernous gulf in class which still exists between themselves and their near neighbours. As the match turned into an almost embarraing United canter in the second half a deathly hush settled on Maine Road’s well stocked terraces.
Bryan Robson opened the scoring after 11 minutes with a mis-hit shot from outside the penalty area.
McClair added the second after 42 minutes with a well directed header, and a third six minutes into the second half after Robson had undertaken the spadework. City’s sole consolation came after 76 minutes when substitute Paul Simpson fired home from 15 yards.
