Frank Swift was absent with a groin strain, but he was not really missed in City’s goal because Grimsby did not provide serious opposition in a one-sided encounter.
Star performer Eddie McMorran put City ahead in the 20th minute with a neat header from a cross by Billy Linacre and the striker netted a second goal in the 44th minute when he steered home a low cross from Jackie Wharton. .
George Smith then easily beat George Tweedy with a low shot in the 61 st minute to make it 3-0. It was on the stroke of full-time that Whitefield grabbed a consolation goal for Grimsby.
