JOE HAYES GRABS THE EQUALISER
Roy Clarke was a major doubt for the game after injury had kept him out ofthe previous couple of League matches. He strove hard to make it but was a little surprised by the medical given him by trainer and former player Laurie Barnett: “l had a fitness test before the game with Laurie. He said ‘right… Iaps… sprints… now get your boots on’. I thought ‘great I’ll be kicking the ball now, I can really test my knee’. He takes me to ` the touchline puts my hands on the wall and says, ‘right… kick the hell out of the wall with the toes of your boots, then we’lI know if you’re fit!’.”
Clarke did make the game, but it was not an easy start for City as the Toffeemen spent the first 45 minutes attacking in style. Bert Trautmann, another injury worry prior to the match, was kept on his toes, finally succumbing to an angled drive from Jimmy Harris. One goal was never going to be enough though, and in the second half Everton started to struggle. ln the 68th minute City captain Roy Paul took a free- kick a little outside the penalty area and chipped the ball to Joe Hayes, who nodded the ball into the net. Around eight minutes later Bobby Johnstone scored the City winner when he threw himself at a Roy Clarke centre. lt was a very good victory.
