…Then came an incident which is still remembered quite vividly by those Barnsley fans who made the journey over the Pennines.
In goal for City was famous England keeper Frank Swift. Even he was beaten by a shot from Johnny Kelly, and, although the muddy ground slowed down the ball it still appeared to be at least a couple of feet over the line when the keeper pulled it back.
Surprisingly, the referee, a certain Mr Meadows, waved play on, and the Reds could hardly believe it.
