MATCH REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY SUN (NEWCASTLE) 15TH AUGUST 1993
Manchester City goalkeeper Tony Coton took the accolades after his magnificent performance at Maine Road.
Coton stood between City and a massacre as he produced a string of world-class saves.
Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson said: “Coton had a flawless afternoon. He stood between us and a reasonable victory.”
Leeds’ £2.9M striker Brian Deane, who’s injury time goal on his debut gave his side a point, joined in his manager’s praise of Coton saying: “Some of his saves were out of this world. He was brilliant.”
City player-manager Peter Reid called for Coton’s inclusion in the England side saying: “I’ve always had a belief that Coton had the edge when it came to the job of England goalkeeper and that was confirmed today.”
But Coton believes his international chance has now gone. “There is no point harping on about it,” he maintained. “You harbor ambitions about playing for your country but realistically I feel that chance has gone.
