Two dramatic goals in the last three minutes of extra time put Leeds into the Northern Area final of the Zenith Data Systems Cup after a tense battle with Manchester City at Elland Road last night.
The game looked like going into a penalty shoot-out until substitute Andy Williams got the first Leeds goal in the 117th minute with a tremendous shot from just outside the area.
Then, in the last minute, Gordon Strachan sealed victory for the Yorkshire side, sliding the ball home after running onto a well-judged free-kick by Mel Sterland. Normal time was notable for a string of fine saves by keepers John Lukic and Tony Coton In the first 22 minutes, Coton came to his side’s rescue five times, denying Strachan twice, Chris Fairclough, Gary McAllister, and Carl Shutt.
Then it was Lukic’s turn to excel and he kept out two powerful drives by Clive Allen.
Just before the interval Leeds were again denied by Coton when he made a superb save to keep out a free kick by Sterland.
