Manchester City embarked on their tough four game in 14 days Christmas stint with leading scorer Dennis Tueart insisting: “I still want to leave… There’s no chance of a reconciliation now. The rift is now too wide to be breached, I won’t change my mind.”
Tueart was listed at his own request six weeks ago after manager Tony Book told him he could not be guaranteed a first team place at Maine Road. Since then Tueart has fought his way back into the side, and with spectacular success.
… He had scored six goals in seven matches before today’s tough clash against one of the First Division’s most improved sides.
His tremendous effort was just headed off the line by a defender, City kept up the pressure and in one attack there were seven City players in the Leeds goal.
But still they could not get the ball into the net thanks to defensive work by the Leeds’ defenders.
… The game swung from end to end in a tantalising style before City were shocked by a goal from Leeds centre half McQueen, who has so often scored vital goals for the Yorkshire side.
City fought back in tremendous fashion with Kidd, Tueart and Hartford doing sterling work.
… It was certainly not City’s day and the run of the ball was entirely against them. Even Cherry’s goal had a slice of luck about it, as it bounced in off the side of the post.
Full credit must go to the Yorkshire side. Their defence played superbly with McQueen a tower of strength in the middle, his height constantly thwarting the eager City attack.
