Manchester City’s bid to end a troubled season on a high note was given a quick boost by Kevin Reeves and Tony Henry against Ipswich Town at Maine Road.
And Paul Sugrue, a £30,000 buy from non-League Nuneaton Borough only two months ago, turned in a sparkling first half show on his Football League debut, as the Blues leapt into a 2-1 lead over a side unbeaten in their previous 24 First Division games.
Sugrue had a hand in the opening goal scored by £1M striker Reeves, his first at home, after only three minutes. But Ipswich centre-half went upfield to equalise three minutes later.
City were not to be denied however, Tony Henry’s clever 11th minute header restored the lead, then Sugrue later saw a header come back off the crossbar.
But there was a blow for City and goal hero Henry, who took a knock and was replaced in the second half by Dave Bennett.
