It was “so near but yet so far” at the tail-end of the 1983-84 season. The reason was that promotion at the first time of asking was
slipping away gradually.
For the first half of the season, the Blues had spent most of the time in either second or third spot in the old Second Division, but after
Christmas, rival contenders seemed able to raise their game.
…The game had been in motion for only 20 seconds when the referee, Derek Owen, awarded the visitors a penalty, which was tucked
away by ex-Bolton skipper Paul jones.
Town suffered a major blow when their captain, Dave Sutton, was carried off with a broken right leg, and Lillis abandoned his attacking role to fill the defensive gap.
City then began to dominate. Ray Ranson made the right-hand touchline his own and sent over a stream of crosses which Steve
Kinsey and David johnson might have converted. Phil Wilson also headed off the line from Derek Parlane.
But it was Huddersfield who increased their lead in the 34th minute through Welsh Under-21 player Daral Pugh.
Bond then gave notice that he was in the hunt for goals, going close with two powerhouse free kicks before scoring from two penalties at the end of the first half.
On-loan substitute Peter Eastoe was adjudged to have handled, and then Brian Laws pushed johnson during five minutes’ stoppage time because of Sutton’s injury. Bond placed both kicks to goalkeeper Keith Mason’s left.
In the second half, the Blues overran their opponents, but Lillis and jones were in no mood to allow City to score again. Instead Town took the points with 11I minutes left. David Cowling crossed from the left and Mick McCarthy should have cleared, but Wilson
scrambled the ball past Alex Williams. Promotion now seemed a distant dream…
