PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 8TH NOVEMBER 1979
Manchester City must now look for further means to reward the loyalty of long serving players.
Chairman Peter Swales gave the thumbs down to testimonials last month. And his decision was rubber stamped last night.
Only a pitiful 8,104 turned out to support honest Joe Corrigan, one of the club’s most dedicated professionals in a decade or more.
City fans have never been the first to rush the testimonial turnstiles, but last night’s final curtain on these out-dated games was a disgrace.
Corrigan has been one of City’s most popular players, courageously picking up his career at a stage when he was on the verge of quitting following terrace abuse.
Big Joe won back the hearts of those fans with a string of superb performances.
The staging of the event at this time of the year must be seriously questioned.
It came not longer after Colin Bell’s testimonial with that player at the end of the road because of injury. There were added problems of the game being in derby week and on a day of torrential rain when fans faced the prospect of a soaking or sitting at home watching European soccer on television.
Coach Malcolm Allison’s demand for all-out effort from players looking for weekend recognition against Manchester United was answered by Tony Henry at least. He scored twice and was unlucky not to get a hat-trick in the 4-0 stroll over Werder Bremen.

  1. Can’t believe only 8000 City fans turned up for Joe’s testimonial. This guy was an absolute legend and he is a great bloke too, a real gentleman.

  2. I was one of the 8,000 there that night.. i think the weather had a major part on the attendance that night. to say it hammered down is an understatement, was like a drowned rat before i even got into the ground.
what is it about City Testimonials and Bad weather? Tony Book , Colin Bell & Big Joe’s
