PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 10TH AUGUST 1983
Manchester City are reaching the climax of a pre-season tour that has so far resembled nothing more than a stroll through a variety of colourful West German parks.
… The opposition so far has been pitiful… “A waste of time,” said McNeill after yet another game that had taxed his side no more than a Maine Road loosening-up session. But he added: “At least we are having match practice and scoring goals.” He warned: “The last thing I want is for the players to believe every game is going to be as easy as the first four have been.”
City last night beat Sinnsheim, a side of no more than social club standing, 4-1 to make it 16 goals shared by eleven players in four games so far.
… Watched by only a few hundred spectators on a tiny, tree surrounded ground… City’s manager employed all of his outfield players. Now the time has come for him to start looking for a settled line-up to start the club’s most crucial campaign in 20 years.
