ARTICLE FROM THE CITY MAGAZINE MAY 2004
As bad omens go, the home slump against Everton in 1993 is perhaps the most apt. This was the last day of a season in which City had flattered to deceive. Peter Reid’s star-studded side were to finish ninth after two previous fifth place finishes and it was difficult to avoid the feeling of anti-climax.
Needing a win to finish sixth, the Blues imploded in spectacular style. Paul Hince wrote in the Manchester Evening News that the display must rank as “the most inept in Peter Reid’s two and a half years stewardship”. Apart from the willing running of Gary Flitcroft, the whole side put in and abject display, none more so than Martyn Margetson, making his first appearance of the season.
The match turned into a shooting circus for Everton, in particular Peter Beagrie and Yugoslav Preki, who sent in shots from great distance, all of which seem destined to fly past the slow-moving Welshman. So bad was the damage that Andy Dibble was brought on to try and plug the gaps, as Margetson’s confidence was torn to shreds in 45 error-strewn minutes.
Reid had promised that the Blues Would sign off the season with a flourish but by the time Jackson and Beardsley had added to Beagrie’s brace and Preki’s howitzer, it looked like an April fool’s Joke gone badly wrong. Sadly, it was May 9th and everyone knew he was for real.
