MATCH REPORT FROM THE IRISH INDEPENDANT 17TH AUGUST 1990
Cobh Ramblers made Manchester City fight for their 1-0 victory in a highly entertaining game at St Colman’s Park last night.
There were only seven minutes left when David White, the England under 21 International scored to save City’s, blushes.
Niall Quinn helped set up the goal and delighted the local fans when he came on with half an hour to play. Manchester manager Howard Kendall introduced Quinn, Ian Brightwell and Neil Poynton at the same time, and these changes transformed the game.
Until then it’s had been a stroll for City and Cobh had held them with a degree of comfort, but suddenly the match talk on a different flavour as Manchester hunted the goal that would save their reputation.
Cobh’s defence responded gamely and the large attendance was treated to a rip-roaring closing half hour. Inevitably, the better chances fell to Manchester, but Cobh midfielder Tony Neiland caused the visitors some worry after 78 minutes, when he took a pass from Neil Abbott in his stride and smashed a shot narrowly over from 25 yards.
David White, a big, powerful winger was a problem for Cobh on the right wing, but teenager Jason Lynch handled him well on his debut.
Quinn volleyed one great chance over the bar from 12 yards and goalkeeper Alex. Ludzic made one excellent save from a shot by Wayne Clarke which he turned over off the crossbar as Manchester strained for a decisive goal.
It came when Quinn withstood a challenge from Eddie O’Halloran in the penalty area. He turned the ball across the box for White to side-foot it into the corner of the nets from 12 yards.
Manchester included Cork City full back Fergus O’Donoghue, and he played competently. He suffered by comparison, however, with Brightwell, who provided Manchester with much more penetration from the right back position.
