David Lacey of The Guardian described the match as enjoyable but frenetic and had few pretensions to a higher status. It was a case of City’s brilliant defending versus Chelsea’s constant failed bombardment of the Citien’s goal
Gordon Dalziel made his debut after joining from Rangers a few days earlier, adding to the continued recruitment of Scotland talent brought in by Billy McNeill.
Chelsea constantly bombarded the City goal, but Alex Williams was continually a thorn in their side, with some confident keeping. Chelsea manager, John Neal complimented him with, what now would be a totally unacceptable comment, describing him as “Joe Corrigan with a sun tan!”
Chelseas best chance came as early as the 11th minute, when a long kick from Niedzwiecki was brilliantly brought down by Kerry Dixon, under pressure from Mike Walsh, he then turned inside Kevin Bond and shot low from inside the penalty area, Alex Williams saved well, however the ball rebounded into the feet of Kevin Speedie, and with an open net in front of him, he inexplicably shot wide from 6 yards.
Just before the break, City’s diminuitive Scottish striker, Jim Tolmie, scored from a great free-kick, Steve Kinsey was fouled 25 yards from goal, and Tolmie curled a strong shot into the top corner of the Chelsea net. Billy McNeill proclaiming after the match “Tolmie’s got that little spark of genius about him. He’s not the finished article yet but he’s a fan’s type of player. Occasionally he does spectacular things…”
