REPORT FROM THE MANCHESTER CITY HANDBOOK 1993/94
City triumphed on the night in this tense West Country clash, although the outcome was in doubt until the closing seconds of extra time. Lady luck certainly helped City’s cause midway through the second-half when Niall Quinn’s shot deflected off a defender and into goal.
City hung on against a determined Rovers side until 15 minutes from time when the home side equalised to set up a nerve-jangling last quarter of an hour of normal time.
The tie went into a tense period of extra time when any slip would have meant disaster for City’s Wembley hopes. In the event Rick Holden’s goal in the closing moments ensured City’s progress into the third round with no time left for Rovers to recover.

  1. (Conversely) all other sources including Gary James book and English Football League Tables website attribute Quinn’s goal as an own goal by Maddison

    • Thanks Adrian, According to the City Handbook 1993/94 they have Quinn as the scorer. As Quinn’s shot was only deflected by Maddison.
