PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 4TH MARCH 1978
You don’t win titles playing the sloppy way out of tune City did at Highbury today.
The Blues bore no resemblance to the side that had beaten Everton seven days earlier as they tumbled to their heaviest defeat of the season.
Outplayed and outclassed throughout, they rarely gave superior Arsenal a serious moment in one of their poorest performances in a long time.
There was hardly a success in a side that completely caved in. But for some fine goalkeeping by Joe Corrigan the margin of defeat would have been greater still.
Rarely did the ball come through smoothly from midfield and the striking power of the front men was never able to reveal itself. Highbury is City’s unlucky ground where they have won only one League game in 15 years.
