IAN CAMERON WRITING IN THE SUNDAY MIRROR 12TH OCTOBER 1980
The departure of Malcolm Allison brought no immediate change in the fortunes of Manchester City. They were given another good hiding yesterday.
But West Brom star Peter Barnes, the former Maine Road favourite, gave City fans some hope for the future when he said: If they show the same character and enthusiasm from now on as they showed by coming back into this game I am sure they will not go down.
They have just got to keep running for each other as they did today. They recovered so well against us that at one time they could have snatched a point. I hope they don’t go down because they are one of the best clubs in the country.”
Albion had blitzed leaderless City with two goals from Regis and Robson in four minutes in the first half and seemed set to go on a goal spree. But their finishing let them down, then midfield flair deserted them, and City scented a bonus at the end of a stormy week of trial and tribulation.
Their tremendous fight-back began with Steve Daley’s goal in the 64th minute. Ally Robertson allowed a Kaziu Deyna drive to rebound off his chest to Daley who snapped up the ball and crashed it into the roof of the net.
City kept plugging away for an equaliser, but the crushing blow came a minute from time when John Trewick finally settled it with a pile-driving volley.
