MIKE COLLETT WRITING IN THE OBSERVER 2ND MAY 1993
… Before Southampton had had a shot at goal, City went close three times, Flowers twice saving superbly from Garry Flitcroft, while Mike Sheron wasted a clear-cut chance, blasting the ball over the bar.
City, with Steve McMahon back in the side for the first time since rupturing a groin in February, dominated the first half, with Flitcroft again going close before they deservedly scored.
The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when Flitcroft wrong-footed Adams wide on the right and crossed for the unmarked White. He powered his header wide of Flowers for his first goal for two months and his 18th of the season.
Southampton came more into the match in the second but, without the driving force of the rested Hurlock, they never seemed able to snap out of their end-of-season lethargy.
Banger, one of the exciting local prospects who has come through the ranks at The Dell, twice tested Coton in the City goal. Le Tissier briefly rose above the general sleepy level with a late run and 25-yard dipping drive which Coton did well to punch over the bar.
It would have been a fine goal to bring about the end of an era at The Dell, where bulldozers start work on rebuilding part of the ground this week. But it would have unfairly denied City a victory they just deserved.
