Southampton manager Lawrie McMenemy took 20 year old striker Trevor Hebberd to one side at half time and set up this 1-0 victory over Manchester City.
Hebberd, along with Phil Boyer and Nick Holmes, had tossed away the chance of giving Saints a commanding lead.
McMenemy explained: “He was hesitating and wanting a couple of touches in the box so I told him to just go out and have a swing at it. He’s a lad who hasn’t got a lot of confidence.
Hebberd heeded his manager’s words and cracked the only goal of the game on the hour.
Alan Ball, the best player on the park, found him on the edge of the box with a short cross and Hebberd drove a low shot past Joe Corrigan and in off a post.
Hebberd and Boyer could so easily have grabbed hat-tricks.
