FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 6TH JANUARY 1990
picking up a point at Leeds, City took on Coventry City at Highfield Road in an intriguing F.A. Cup clash. After 90 minutes the Manchester Blues trudged off the pitch wondering how they had managed to go out of the competition 1-2 after outplaying the First Division side for much of the match.
We carried the game to the home team without any material reward. Our finishing was abysmal, the usually reliable Melrose being the main culprit. The other contributor to our frustrations was Ogrizovic who made some excellent saves from Melrose, Baker, Smith and Kinsey.
Terry Gibson scored twice in 4 minutes in the second half, both goals following Adams corners. Latchford flicked on the first, Gibson netting from 6 yards, and Pearce set him up to volley in the second. Power picked up our consolation prize near the end after Ogrizovic had blocked a Baker shot.
