MARK WARD PUTS CITY 1-0 UP FROM THE PENALTY SPOT
ADAPTED FROM AN ARTICLE IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 23RD SEPTEMBER 1995
The Blues continued an impressive run of points-gathering when they drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge and moved into sixth place in the First Division.
The man-of-the-match just had to be Tony Coton for a string of fine saves as City escaped from a four-or five-goal hiding. Chelsea must have wondered just what they had to do to beat, the ‘keeper.
It was one-way traffic by the Londoners for the opening half-hour and amazingly they found themselves a goal behind after giving away a penalty. Erland Johnsen pushed Niall Quinn and Mark Ward made no mistake from the spot-kick, putting it inside Dave Beasant’s left-hand post.
In truth, City had very few other chances to score and Beasant had an easy afternoon.
Kevin Wilson snatched a win away from City in the 73rd minute when at last a shot beat Coton. Later, Kevin McAllister missed a good chance for the home side, along with several more by his team mates.
