A superb headed goal by David White ensured a 100% record for Manchester City on their pre-season tour of Eire.
But the Blues squandered a bagful of clear-cut chances in their final match in the Republic last night.
And the biggest culprit of all was local hero. Niall Quinn, who fluffed a 65th minute penalty in front of almost 5,000 fellow Dubliners And under the watchful gaze of his international manager, Jack Charlton.
The big Striker took the penalty after being hauled down by Robbie Best. And the player who had been mobbed by adoring fans throughout City’s tour must have wished he was some somewhere else when keeper John Connolly dived to his left to parry Quinn’s penalty kick.
However, the young Bohemian’s keeper wouldn’t have been quite so popular with his team mates when White scored the decisive goal after 17 minutes.
Connolly was caught in no-man’s land when the rock steady Steve Redmond hoisted a free kick deep into Bohemian’s territory. In a flash, White spotted the keeper was out of position and nipped in front of his marker to send a fierce header into the net from 20 yards. The Blues. power-house right winger almost added a second with a drive which produced a fabulous save.
And young striker Mike Sheron should have capped an impressive display when he raced clear, only to drag his shot wide of an open goal.
Neither Tony Coton nor second-half sub Martyn Margetson had a serious shot to save, with Redmond and his back four keeping a vice-like command.
White, twice, and the lively Sheron had further second-half chances, but in the end, the Maine Road men were content to record their third successive tour victory.
Said City assistant manager Sam Ellis: “We have won all our matches, which is nice, but even more importantly the three hard workouts have started to put an edge on the players’ fitness. Young Mike Sheron will have benefited from the experience and I felt his overall performance was first class.”
