In front of what was then a record crowd at Villa Park, a relegation threatened City struggled and after a goal-less first half Villa went 2-0 up, and even though Peter Doherty got one back Villa scored again to make it 3-1 and a 90th minute own goal by Jimmy Allen was just a consolation for the Blues.
