Bilbao had little answer to the countless attacks and innumerable shots from City’s eager forwards. Indeed it was only the skill of Iribar, and the number of defenders they packed into the goalmouth, that kept the score down. City`s pressure never eased though no score came before half-time. In the 58th minute Oakes. their tireless wing forward. swept through the Atletico defence to score a superb goal from 25 yards.

COLIN BELL MAKES IT 2-0

FROM FRANCIS LEE, TRIUMPH, TREACHERY AND TOILET ROLLS
I don’t know how the game was goalless At the break, probably down to the heroics of their keeper Iribar and the packed defence in front of him. I was still sure We’d crack them. We kept the pressure on but had to wait until 12 minutes after the interval before the breakthrough came.
Alan Oakes picked the ball up on halfway and he ran forward, and ran, and ran, they just backed off and Alan tried his look, brilliantly from 25 yards, and it absolutely flew in. Our second one seemed to end up in the back of the net in slow motion. Iribar dashed out to try to block Mike Summerbee on the edge of the area, but the ball squirted out to Neil Young and his shot was half blocked, the ball looping high towards the goal. When it finally dropped, Colin Bell was able to nod in from almost under the bar.
We wrapped it up five minutes from time when I played an angled ball through to Neil Young. When he again had a shot blocked by keeper Iribar, Ian Bowyer pounced to pounced To despatch the rebound. That was it, 3-0 and our first success in European competition.
