MATCH REPORT FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 21ST MAY 1993
David Brightwell’s first senior goal left Manchester City beaten on their short tour of South Africa.
The centre-back rose to a cross from elder brother Ian after 32 minutes to power home a header which earned the Blues a draw against one of the strongest sides in the South African First Division.
Roared on by a 15,000 plus crowd in Durban. Rangers began at a furious pace and took the lead in the 25th minute through Gerson Arroe.
City, who lost player-manager Peter Reid with an ankle injury in the first half, weathered the storm, although keeper Tony Coton had to palm away a shot from defender Dan Malisela.
Reid’s side looked increasingly threatening with David White’s powerful drive grazing the bar.
David Kerr twice came close to giving his side the lead while Mike Quigley had the ball in the net only to be ruled off-side.
Reid, however, was acknowledged that a draw was a fair result in the game which further cemented his club’s new found support in soccer-mad South Africa.
The Blues have won countless friends during their nine-day tour in which Reid’s players conducted coaching clinics.
Says Reid: “The standards are much higher than I imagined and the people love soccer. We have enjoyed the tour enormously. it was certainly a treat for the players to be able to pass on a few tips in the coaching sessions and it was nice to escape from Manchester after what United have done. It was a chance for our younger players to further their claims and no-one impressed more than David Kerr. He had a brilliant tour and I think he can become an important part of our future.”
