Long serving Johnny Hart’s 30 year association with Manchester City will be rewarded with a near £9,000 cheque when his testimonial fund is finally wound up.
Biggest part of the pay-off to Hart, who has been player, trainer, coach and manager at Maine Road, came when 12,592 fans paid £6,457 for last night’s testimonial match between City and Stoke.
And what a memorable night. City’s 3-1 victory was incidental to an occasion that smacked of humour, nostalgia and rich entertainment.
There was humour at half time as stars from the past revealed their former skills in an enjoyable nine-a-side game.
There was nostalgia in the return of Bert Trautmann, who sportingly played throughout the second half, and gave today’s stars proof that his old goalkeeping is by no means dormant.
There was entertainment in the subtle skills of Rodney Marsh, back in action for the first time since a cartilage operation.
It was Hart’s big night, but Trautmann and Marsh stole the limelight.
Stars from two different eras, they gave the crowd full value for money in one of the best testimonial events I have seen.
Marsh’s contribution was particularly significant, for he revealed exciting promise for next season. In a link with Dennis Tueart that could mean big things for the Blues.
… In the half time game, the ex-City stars beat the combined All Stars 2-1. With goals from Paddy Fagan and Tony Book, Bobby Smith scored for the All Stars.
