FROM MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 13TH AUGUST 1984
Tony Cunningham’s value in the air was revealed yesterday in particular when the Blues romped to a 5-0 win over Finn Harps, who recently held First Division Southampton to 1-0.
Said McNeill today: “I have stressed throughout that the important thing is that we have a vital competition for places. This still very much applies and no player will get a place on reputation alone.
Progress has been made since we started with those two games in Scotland more than a week ago. The big test will come this week when we take on Spurs at Maine Road on Thursday.
Obviously the side I pick for that game will be as near as possible to the line-up that will start the season at Wimbledon a week on Saturday.”
