DERBY DEFEAT ROUGH JUSTICE
MATCH REPORT FROM THE OLDHAM ADVERTISER 28TH JANUARY 1993
Battling Latics restored their pride after Saturday’s poor performance at Coventry but we’re unlucky to find no reward.
Perhaps it was the long waited return of Andy Ritchie which sparked the life back into them, touches of his old brilliance on the ball lit up this fearsome derby battle.
And it was Oldham who bombarded the City penalty area in the first half but couldn’t apply the finish as Peter Reid’s men defended in numbers.
A Gunnar Halle drive was deflected and Ian Olney’s follow up header saved.
Athletic’s slick one touch football carved open the City defence again as Neil Adams collected Richie’s defense splitting ball but couldn’t find the power to beat Tony Coton.
As Latics continued to press forward Craig Fleming found Olney but his shot was blocked by Coton, although Olney felt he’d been pulled back by Michael Vonk.
Roger Palmer raced clear after Ritchie and Olney had helped on Paul Gerrard’s kick, but the veteran goal poacher was brought down by Coton just outside the penalty area. Under today’s rules Coton ought to have been sent off but escaped with a yellow card. He was one of five City players booked.
Ritchie’s shot on the turn from 25 yards out brought a fine one handed save from Coton who then raced off his line to block Olney’s effort when Fleming swung over a cross from the right.
Little had been seen of City as an attacking force apart from an early Niall Quinn header which was well saved by Gerrard.
But in heartbreaking fashion City snatch victory with just 15 minutes to go. Former Latics favourite Rick Holden crossed from the left and Quinn stooped to flick a header into the far corner. it was rough justice for Latics.
